Lembeck is on Silvers' right. The other actor is Allan Melvin. You'll Never Get Rich was the original title but that didn't last long. The Phil Silvers Show was the title for almost all of the run of 138 episodes. The show ran from 1955 to 1959 and was then syndicated. The show did not so much fold in primary distribution as become a burden to all concerned. Apparently Silvers and Hiken were becoming played out and the cost of the cast of 20 regulars had become a burden. The time simply came for syndication though not everyone was happy about that. We were privileged. Silvers and the other cast members were mostly old stagers from Vaudeville. However corny the material, it was delivered by genuine pros. If the opportunity presents, have a look at the episode of inducting a chimp. into the army. Animals were notorious in show business for the problems they caused on stage. The court martial of the chimp. shows off Silvers and the cast to perfection. The chimp. starts acting up, playing with a prop telephone and jumping around the set but for performers of Silvers' calibre no reshoot is required. Everything is handled by adlib with the other cast member falling seamlessly into the improvisation. |

Carl Switzer wasn't aware of the fact here but, like Gigi, this little Elizabeth was going to grow up. (We used to see Switzer in the Our Gang films on KVOS. Switzer appeared in minor roles in a few films later in life including The High and the Mighty. He was the co-pilot of the Canso, the PBY, flying out to assist the ailing aircraft in Gann's story. He had made a tenuous living as a bartender and died a squalid death in 1959.) |

You see where these gentlemen are casting their gaze. The costumer has ensured that Rex Harrison and Richard Burton are in no need of Ray Milland's special eye drops here! In this poster, Elizabeth Taylor, in the finest tradition of her gender, of which Taylor had been assigned an abundance, employs cleavage power on the unresisting Messrs Harrison and Burton. 1963 was the year for the megamovie "Cleopatra" |
