Ellis Pryce-Jones, Bio.
Ellis M. Pryce-Jones (Head of Costume Area and Theatre Department Graduate Coordinator) holds an M.F.A. in Design from the Yale School of Drama, and a B.A. in Theatre from the University of British Columbia, Canada. A scenic/costume designer, scenic artist, and graphic illustrator, his is currently enjoying his 30th year at UNLV. An active artist-educator, he has designed productions ranging from original plays to "the classics," including costumes for Love's Labors Lost, A Little Night Music, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Sweet Charity, and Cabaret (at UNLV); Fiddler on the Roof (Univ. of North Carolina, Greensboro). Settings for Drood, (The Laguna-Moulton Playhouse), Barnum (Atlantic City), the world premiere of the stage version of Charlotte's Web (The Rainbow Company Children's Theatre), SRO (St. Louis), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Union Plaza Hotel, Las Vegas), Angelina Ballerina (Serendipity Children's Theatre, Los Angeles), Frederic Apcar's Showbiz (Reno), and Bingo! (the Steve Wynn 50th birthday musical tribute at the Mirage Hotel/Casino, Las Vegas, directed by Joe Layton). In 2002 he designed costumes for Wole Soyinka's adaptation of Oedipus at Colonus, which premiered at the XI International meeting on Ancient Greek Drama in Delphi, Greece. His designs for The South Carolina Shakespeare Company in Columbia include settings and costumes for Richard III and settings for The Winter's Tale, The Rover, Henry V, and Much Ado About Nothing. He received critical praise for scenic, costume, and prop designs for the Gretchen Cryer/Nancy Ford musical Circle of Friends at American Girl Place Theatre in Chicago.
Professor Pryce-Jones' book and theatre reviews appeared in The Opera Journal, and he illustrationed the first four editions of Acting in Person and in Style (Jerry L. Crawford); The Golden Stage, Ten-Minute Plays for Mature Actors, Creative Dramatics for Senior Adults (Ann McDonough); and Consider the Possibilities (edited by Ann McDonough and Douglas Hill). In addition to one-man shows and other honors, Pryce-Jones is the recipient of a Five Year Pin for work as on-call scenic artist for the MGM Grand spectacle EFX, The Governor's Arts Award for contribution to the arts in Southern Nevada), a UNLV Extended Faculty Excellence Award for work in leading London theatre tours, and Most Outstanding Faculty Instructor in the College of Fine Arts Award. Recently, he received the College of Fine Arts 2003 Charles Vanda Award for Excellence in the Arts. He is a member of United Scenic Artists 829 (scenic design, costume design) and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology.
